Scholarships

Are scholarships available?

The Alabama Community College System provides scholarship funding for technical and academic programs.  In addition, Shelton State Community College has partnered with Tuscaloosa City Schools to offer additional scholarship opportunities through the “Elevate Tuscaloosa Scholarship.”

DUAL ENROLLMENT CAREER EDUCATION (CE) SCHOLARSHIP

Student Eligibility for Dual Enrollment Career Education Scholarship

The student must be in the 10th, 11th, or 12th grade and have a 2.0 GPA or higher for most technical programs and a 2.5 GPA for academic courses.  Students participating in Dual Enrollment HIT, RPT, and CIS must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.  Approval from the high school counselor or the home school director is also required. All students receiving scholarships must meet established placement criteria as determined by appropriate ACT, SAT, or placement exam scores.  Approval from secondary school officials indicates that the student has demonstrated both academic readiness and social maturity.

Continuous Eligibility

Students who fail to meet the minimum grade requirement or withdraw from a course will be suspended from the program for a minimum of one term.  The student may not re-enroll until the suspension has been served. For re-entry, the student must reapply to the program and meet the minimum grade point average requirement of 2.5 or higher.

All academic courses that are 100 level or above are eligible for scholarship funds. Students are permitted to enroll in one technical program per semester. Students may receive up to a maximum of two free classes per semester.  The scholarship will cover tuition, fees, and textbooks when funding is available.

First Time Dual Enrollment Students

Dual enrollment students enrolling in the program for the first time will receive one free class during their first semester. Funding will only be provided for textbooks and course materials if it is associated with technical programs.

Returning Dual Enrollment Students

Returning dual enrollment students will receive a maximum of two free classes during the fall and spring semesters. Funding will only be provided for textbooks and course materials if it is associated with technical programs.

Funding

Depending on the availability of funding, dual enrollment technical scholarship funds may be used to cover tuition, textbooks, and supplies, as well as the needs of the individual student and the requirements of the technical classes.  The scope of each scholarship is determined by available funding and scholarship grant guidelines.  Costs covered will be determined on an individual basis.

Scholarship funds are contingent upon allocations by the Alabama Legislature. Shelton State has received technical scholarship grants since the program was initiated by the state in 2008, however, future grant awards are not guaranteed and will depend on availability of funding through Alabama Workforce Development.

Scholarship funds for summer semesters will cover one course, either technical or academic. Funding will only be provided for textbooks and course materials if it is associated with technical programs.

Students should review the list of eligible Career and Technical Education Programs to ensure their program of interest is approved.
