Welcome to eLearning
Are you looking for a flexible schedule? Do you have a full-time job? These are not reasons to keep you from furthering your education!
Today, prospective students may find it challenging to attend a traditional class, and Shelton State recognizes that work commitments and geographical constraints often prevent students from advancing their educational journeys.
At Shelton State Community College (SSCC), we believe everyone should have the same opportunity to advance, regardless of time and location. This is why we have created a robust eLearning program. SSCC eLearning offers students the ability to attend classes using a variety of distance education delivery methods.
Distance education is defined as a formal educational process in which most instruction occurs when the student and instructor are not in the same place. SSCC courses use current technology to enable students to learn through a variety of delivery methods. Students can elect to learn asynchronously in online classes, which allow them to study and complete assignments at a time that is most convenient for them each week. They can also elect to attend classes synchronously from home at a set time each week. These virtual classes enable students to engage with their instructor in real-time, eliminating the need to travel to campus. Finally, hybrid classes combine on-campus instruction with online instruction, providing students with the flexibility to complete a portion of the course remotely while also having the opportunity to meet with their instructor in a traditional classroom setting.
Currently, several programs can be completed entirely online, while many others can be completed partially online. Please see the SSCC Online Programs page for more information on these programs. The College continually expands distance education offerings, so please check the page regularly for the latest updates.
While convenience is helpful, it is also important to note that eLearning courses are not ideal for all students. A common misconception is that an online class is “easier” than a traditional class. This is not true. An eLearning class is comparable to a traditional course, though students often find they spend more time actively working in an eLearning class because they must read the directions and view lectures that are typically “presented” to them in a traditional class. SSCC eLearning classes are based on the same instructional outcomes and objectives as traditional on-campus classes. During a standard semester, students should be prepared to dedicate 6-9 hours per week to be successful in the course, as these classes require as much commitment as any class offered on campus. Just like traditional classes, they require dedicated, ongoing, and regular participation.
SSCC eLearning aims to support all students in achieving success, regardless of the course delivery method they choose, and strives to ensure they are well-prepared. Before registering for an SSCC eLearning course, students are encouraged to explores the SSCC eLearning Success page to learn more about what it takes to be a successful eLearning student. Also on that page, they should take the Online Readiness Assessment to determine if an eLearning course is right for their educational needs. All eLearning courses are offered through Canvas, the College’s Learning Management System. It is also recommend that all prospective students explore Canvas via the Canvas Resources for Students Course. This course will help new students understand the basic functions of Canvas before the first day of class.
SSCC eLearning students are expected to abide by the policies and procedures in the Shelton State Community College Catalog and Student Handbook.
