Technology Recommendations for Students in Distance Education
All coursework must be submitted on Canvas, the College’s Learning Management System (LMS). You must have regular access to a computer equipped with the following:
- Microsoft Office Suite (Latest Version) – Shelton State students have access to Office 365 for free, which includes the Office Suite. It can be downloaded from the student’s MyShelton homepage.
- Windows 10/11 (32/64 bit), macOS (13.0 or higher), or Chrome OS.
- Honorlock remote proctoring requires the use of a Google Chrome plug-in and the latest version of the Google Chrome Web browser
- Honorlock remote proctoring also requires the use of a desktop or laptop computer. Honorlock will not operate on a mobile device (phone, tablet, iPad, etc.).
- SSCC eLearning recommends that students have administrative rights on the computer they are using for Honorlock remote proctoring, as some exams may require the installation of the Honorlock desktop application.
- Internet connection: High-speed (DSL, Cable, or LAN) is required. Dial-up, cellular high-speed, and satellite internet service are not supported. 3 Mbps minimum download and 3 Mbps minimum upload speed is required. Please check with your Internet provider to help ensure you meet this requirement.
- Memory: 8 GB RAM or higher
- Hard drive: 20 GB of free space
- Screen resolution: Minimum 1024 x 768
- Webcam: SSCC eLearning recommends students have an external plug-in camera that can be used for exams requiring a side-view recording. Honorlock supports most external cameras, but ONN, Amcrest, and Nexigo cameras are not currently supported for remote proctoring.
- A working microphone is required for Honorolock assessments.
Students who do not have the recommended equipment for remote proctoring, may schedule to have their Honorlock assessments completed on-campus. Students should check their global announcements in Canvas for the current term’s schedule and the links to register for an on-campus assessment.
Students are expected to have a backup plan in the event that their computer has operational problems, they lose electricity, or they lose Internet access. These factors are not an excuse for late or incomplete submission of assignments nor are they acceptable reasons for an assignment deadline extension. Most public libraries, school libraries, university libraries, etc., have computers with Internet access that are available for public use. However, students should not assume that public locations will allow or are suitable for remote proctoring.
