Theatre Tuscaloosa Announces 2018 Fall Workshop Schedule

Theatre Tuscaloosa workshop

September 4, 2018 – Theatre Tuscaloosa Academy will hold five workshops this fall for acting, dancing, and house management training.

Tap Class Session I will be held on Wednesday nights for six weeks beginning September 19 and ending October 24, and Tap Class Session II will be held on Thursday nights for six weeks beginning November 1 and ending December 6. Both sessions will be held in the Shelton State Dance Studio (room 1901). These classes will have two levels of instruction.

The beginner class will meet from 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., and the intermediate/advanced class will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. These workshops are available for anyone at least 16 years of age and with any level of dance experience. Theatre Tuscaloosa Academy veteran Beth Key Rominger will teach all classes. Tuition is $40 per student, and each class will have a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 students.

“A Taste of Improv” is a workshop offered in cooperation with Positively Funny, Inc. (PFI) and the PFI Comedy Institute of Birmingham and will give participants a “taste” of what improv classes are all about. This workshop will be held on Sunday, September 23 at 2:00 p.m. in the Shelton State Dance Studio and will cost $20. The class will last two hours and will cover some of the basic concepts of improv, including living in the moment and boosting your self-confidence. The class is limited to the first 15 people who register. Any student who decides to continue with the eight-week workshop “Basic Improv: The Fundamentals” course (see below) will have the tuition of this workshop applied to the full cost of the 8-week program.

“Basic Improv: The Fundamentals” is an in-depth improv workshop offered in cooperation with PFI. Classes will be held on Monday nights for eight weeks beginning October 8 and ending December 3 (there will be no class held on November 12) from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Shelton State Dance Studio. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of exercises and games that train the analytical side of the brain to focus on simple goals, freeing the creative side, and silencing negative thoughts that can make individuals freeze during a performance. No prior experience is required to enroll in this workshop. Students must be at least 16 years of age to register, and tuition is $195 for the full eight-week course.

Both improv offerings will be instructed by PFI Chief Creative Officer David Grissom, who received his improv training at the famed Second City in Chicago. Before founding PFI, David was a staff writer for television shows including 3rd Rock from the Sun, That 70s Show, Will & Grace (original), Weeds, and Grey’s Anatomy.

House manager training will be held Sunday, November 18 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Wilson Carr Rehearsal Hall. This training is for individuals who are looking for a volunteering role with more responsibility. House managers help the Front-of-House staff keep things running smoothly during performances to ensure that Theatre Tuscaloosa patrons have the best experience possible. There is no registration fee for this course, but space is limited.
