International Student Admissions

Welcome to International Student Services (ISS). Shelton State Community College offers international students a variety of services to help with the transition to the U.S., the state of Alabama, and our campus community.  ISS provides the support and assistance necessary for international students to achieve their education goals while ensuring compliance with government immigration regulations. We look forward to helping you achieve your higher learning goals.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

For admission purposes, someone is considered an international applicant if they are NOT a U.S. citizen or permanent resident or do not hold refugee status or political asylum status. Those who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, refugees, or political asylum holders, should apply as a domestic student, not international.

An international freshman is an international applicant who will complete, or has completed Secondary School, but has not enrolled in any College courses.

Transfer

An international transfer student is an international applicant who has graduated from Secondary School and has completed one or more courses at the college level.

Special Groups include international applicants who wish to take courses as a transient student or non-degree seeking student.

In preparing to register for courses, it is important to know the delivery methods for instruction. The table below provides additional information concerning schedule types and instructional methods. It is important to note that online, hybrid, and virtual formats require access to a computer with high-speed internet capabilities, a webcam, and a microphone.

Virtual OnlineClass has specific days and times that students will meet virtually through a video conferencing platform. Students are not required to come to campus. Students take exams using the College's online test proctoring service or in an approved proctored environment.
VirtualHybridClass has specific days and times that students will meet virtually through a video conferencing platform and specific days and times that students will meet on campus. Exams may be given on campus or using the College's online test proctoring service.
  • International student tuition is two (2) times that of residents of the state of Alabama.
  • International students must provide a signed, notarized statement verifying adequate financial support and a complete financial statement documenting the ability to pay the cost of attendance. The official statement from the financial institution must be dated within the last three months and include the following information:
    • Minimum of $28,000 (USD)
    • If applicable, a minimum of $3,600 (USD) is required for each additional dependent in addition to the $28,000 for tuition.
    • Financial documentation must provide the specific amount of funds and the name(s) of the account holder.
    • Financial documentation must be in English; otherwise, attach a translation into English.
  • INSURANCE: Documentation is required that demonstrates adequate health and life insurance, which must be maintained during enrollment. International student policies are required to provide up to $500,000 in major medical insurance as well as medical evacuation and repatriation. Students who do not present their own health insurance must purchase a health insurance policy through Shelton State. Students who do not present their own health insurance must purchase a health insurance policy through the Students are required to pay for international insurance coverage at the time of registration. (Note: Spring and summer semesters are combined unless the summer is the student’s first semester.)
  • Shelton State provides no dormitory facilities. All prospective students are responsible for their own housing, books, utilities, transportation, and personal allowances.

NOTE: Please submit all completed forms, documents, and supporting documentation in one email. DO NOT send separate documents in different emails. Doing so could lead to the loss of documents and delays in processing. Incomplete submissions will not be processed in a timely manner.  Please only submit your information when you have all documents ready.
