Theatre Tuscaloosa to Host Statewide Community Theatre Festival November 1-2

ACT Fest

October 18, 2019 – For the third consecutive year, Theatre Tuscaloosa will host the Alabama Conference of Theatre’s annual Community Theatre Festival (ACTFest) November 1-2 in the Bean-Brown Theatre on the Martin Campus of Shelton State Community College (9500 Old Greensboro Rd).

ACTFest gives community theatre artists from across the state an opportunity to showcase their work and the potential to earn a place at the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) Community Theatre Festival. Participating companies prepare a 60-minute (maximum) performance, which may be an entire one-act play or a cutting or selection from a full-length play. Each company must fit all its scenery and props into a 10-foot by 10-foot square before its performance. The rules require companies to set-up during a 10-minute window, perform during a 60-minute window, and breakdown and return their sets to their 10 by 10 squares during a final 10-minute strike window. Three independent adjudicators then review each performance and ultimately determine which productions will go on to represent Alabama at SETC (Feb. 26 – March 1, 2020 in Louisville, KY).

This year’s ACTFest will feature six performances by community theatres from five Alabama cities.

Friday, November 1, 2019

  1. Theatre Tuscaloosa (Tuscaloosa, AL): Love, Loss, and What I Wore by Nora & Delia Ephron
  2. The Actor’s Charitable Theatre (Tuscaloosa, AL): Buried Child by Sam Shepard

Saturday, November 2, 2019

  1. Self Express Productions (Winfield, AL): Macbeth by William Shakespeare
  2. South City Theatre (Pelham, AL): The Gulf by Audrey Cefaly
  3. Spark Theater Company (Dothan, AL): The 25th Annual Putnum County Spelling Bee, Book by Rachel Sheinkin, Music and Lyrics by William Finn, conceived by Rebecca Feldman
  4. Auburn Area Community Theatre (Auburn, AL): An Ongoing Examination of the True Meaning of Life by S.W. Senek

All performances are open to the general public, and Theatre Tuscaloosa’s patrons are encouraged to attend and cheer-on the cast and crew.

The cast of Love, Loss, and What I Wore includes: Faith Bonitz, Vickie Davis, Carol DeVelice, Louise Manos, Kim Palm, and NorQuina “Q” Rieves. Dianna Brown Shaw is directing this revival of the 2018 SecondStage production.

Tickets will go on sale October 1. Individual performances will be $7.00. Discounted multi-show day-passes will be available. Friday’s day-pass will include two performances and cost $12 each. Saturday’s day-pass will cost $24 and includes four performances. A full weekend pass will also be offered for $30, which will include all six performances and admission to the festival’s hospitality room where complimentary refreshments will be available throughout the festival.

To protect the integrity of the performance and adjudication process, no one will be admitted after each performance starts. Audience members are therefore strongly encouraged to arrive at least 30 minutes early in case there are last-minute adjustments to the performance schedule and/or unanticipated traffic or other delays. Tickets and passes are non-refundable.

Paid members of the Alabama Conference of Theatre (ACT) will be admitted to all performances at no additional charge. ACT members and participating companies will also have access to a series of five educational workshops about various aspects of theatrical production and the hospitality room.
