Theatre Tuscaloosa to Hold Steel Magnolias Auditions August 16 & 17

Steel Magnolias Audition

July 30, 2019 – Theatre Tuscaloosa will hold auditions for Steel Magnolias, Friday, August 16 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 17 at 2:00 p.m. in the in the Wilson Carr Rehearsal Hall on the Martin Campus of Shelton State Community College (9500 Old Greensboro Rd).

The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks her life to bear a child. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny, and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

Steel Magnolias has numerous female roles available. One cast member from the 2005 production will return. Kathy Wilson will play “M’Lynn.” Those who audition should be prepared to participate in cold readings from the script. All who audition must bring their calendars and list all conflicts regarding the rehearsal schedule on their audition sheets.

Scripts of Steel Magnolias are available to read in the Theatre Tuscaloosa Ticket Office in advance (recommended); however, scripts may not leave the premises. The Ticket Office is open Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Friday 9:00 a.m. – noon.

Rehearsals are currently scheduled to begin August 26. Rehearsals are generally held Monday through Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. The final rehearsal schedule will be published after casting.
