Theatre Tuscaloosa to Hold Auditions December 8 & 9

Crowns, a gospel musical

November 13, 2018 – Theatre Tuscaloosa will hold open auditions for its spring musical, Crowns, on Saturday, December 8 at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 9 at 2:00 p.m. in the Bean-Brown Theatre on the Martin Campus of Shelton State Community College (9500 Old Greensboro Rd.).

In this celebratory musical, hats are the centerpiece of an exploration of African American history and identity as seen through the eyes of a young African American woman who has come down South to stay with her aunt after her brother is killed in Brooklyn. The characters use their exquisite hats to tell tales about everything from the etiquette of hats to their historical and contemporary social functioning. The tradition of hats is traced back to African rituals and slavery and forward to the New Testament and current fashion.

Crowns has one male role and five female roles available. Those who audition should prepare sixteen bars of a traditional gospel or R&B song, bring appropriate shoes and attire for the dance portion, and be prepared to participate in cold readings from the script. All who audition must bring their calendars and list all conflicts regarding the rehearsal schedule on their audition sheets.

Scripts of Crowns are available to read in the Theatre Tuscaloosa Ticket Office in advance (recommended); however, scripts may not leave the premises. The Ticket Office is open Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Friday 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon.

Rehearsals will begin January 8, 2019. Rehearsals are generally held Monday through Friday evenings and some Sunday afternoons. There will be several all-day rehearsals on Saturdays and some days off during the week. The final rehearsal schedule will be published after casting.

Crowns will be presented February 15-24, 2019, in the Bean-Brown Theatre on the Martin Campus of Shelton State Community College. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturday, February 16. Matinee performances will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sundays; Wednesday, February 20; and Saturday, February 23. A pay-what-you-can final dress rehearsal will be presented on Thursday, February 14 at 7:30 p.m., a portion of proceeds of which will benefit the Charlie Dennis Memorial Scholarship Fund.
