Theatre Tuscaloosa Announces First SecondStage Show of 2018-19
September 20, 2018 – Theatre Tuscaloosa will present Nora and Delia Ephron’s Love, Loss and What I Wore Tuesday, October 2 – Saturday, October 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Green Bar (2209 4th Street, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401).
Love, Loss and What I Wore is the first SecondStage show of the 2018-19 season. Based on the book by Ilene Beckerman, a variety of stories about women are told through the emotional ties they have to their wardrobes. A tapestry of monologues, this show weaves together women’s clothing and the memories each item evokes into a touching performance.
“I am excited to bring a show like this to Tuscaloosa because there’s something in here everyone can relate to,” says Kiera Gillock, co-director of Love, Loss and What I Wore and coordinator of Theatre Tuscaloosa’s SecondStage. “Every woman has a story in her life that she can tie to a piece of clothing, whether it’s a dress she wore during every one of her pregnancies, a color she can’t help but get every piece of her wardrobe in, or how she feels her disorganized purse is a representation of the rest of her life.”
Love, Loss and What I Wore has 29 rotating female roles played by a cast including Louise Holifield Manos, Carol DeVelice, Donna Luther Wright, Faith Bonitz, Hannah Byrd, Kim Carver Palm, Madeline Plunkett, NorQuina Rieves, and Vickie Davis, with Hope Bonitz serving as understudy for all roles. The show is co-directed by Dianna Brown Shaw.
Original artwork presented in the show is created by Bridget Winder, a long-time Theatre Tuscaloosa performer and professional artist. The artwork will be auctioned off following the show, and proceeds of the auction will benefit community organizations that work to empower women.
“This play shows how all women are kindred spirits,” says Manos, who plays the guiding character of the show, Gingy. “Both the book and play speak out loud so many of the thoughts women have and don’t always voice.”
Theatre Tuscaloosa also welcomes to the stage Dr. Bebe Barefoot-Lloyd as a speaker for Love, Loss and What I Wore. Following each performance, Dr. Barefoot-Lloyd will speak with the audience, relating back to her 20-year career as a college instructor in Women’s Studies and English, teaching courses such as “Fashion and Culture” and “Images of Women in Myth, Literature, and Popular Culture.”
Theatre Tuscaloosa’s 2018-2019 season is supported by the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Arts & Humanities Council of Tuscaloosa, and the City of Tuscaloosa.
Love, Loss and What I Wore will be presented October 2-6, 2018 at Green Bar. All performances will be at 7:30 p.m. All tickets are general admission and cost $8.00. Audience members must be at least 19 years of age to enter Green Bar.
