Theatre Tuscaloosa Announces Fall 2019 Academy Classes

August 10, 2019 – Theatre Tuscaloosa Academy will host improvisation (improv) classes (basic, intermediate, and master-level) and adult tap dance classes (Level 1 and 2) during fall 2019.

 

All improv & tap classes will be held in the dance studio (Room 1901) on the Martin Campus of Shelton State Community College (SSCC). All students must be at least 16 years of age. Intermediate Improv, Mastering Improv, and Tap Level 2 require the completion of prerequisite courses.

 

Improv classes are offered in partnership with Positively Funny, Inc. (PFI), whose company members serve as instructors. Based in Birmingham, PFI is lead by David Grissom, Chief Creative Officer, who received his improv training at the famed Second City in Chicago. Before founding PFI, David was a staff writer for television shows including 3rd Rock from the Sun, That 70s Show, Will & Grace (original), Weeds, and Grey’s Anatomy.

 

Basic Improv: The Fundamentals will be held on Mondays (no class on Labor Day 9/2), August 19-September 30 from 7:00 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Students begin to learn the skills needed to create strong improvised scenes. Some of these skills include building ensemble, giving and taking focus, object work, and the crucial concept of “yes, and.” Improv instructional games involve high-energy cooperation. No previous experience is required. Tuition for this course is $195 per person.

 

Intermediate Improv: Scene Work will be held Mondays, October 21-November 25 from 7:00 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Students who have completed Basic Improv will learn skills including emotion, listening, and transformation, as well as continuing to hone skills learned in Basic Improv. Tuition for this course is $195 per person.

 

Mastering Improv will be held on Tuesdays from 7:00 p.m.-9:30 p.m. during both August 20-September 24 and October 22-November 26. This class is for students who have completed Basic Improv: The Fundamentals, Intermediate Improv: Scene Work, and Advanced Improv: Games for Performance. Instruction will focus on Advanced Scene Work, Characters & Environment, and Styles & Genres. Tuition for this course is $195 per person.

 

Instructed by Beth Key Rominger, Adult Tap Dance classes will be held, on Thursdays, September 12-November 7. Level 1 will meet from 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m., and Level 2 will meet from 7:15 p.m.-8:15 p.m. Level 1 is designed for beginners and/or those with limited tap experience who would like to develop their mastery of basic tap skills. Tap Level 2 is designed for those who have completed Level 1, or for persons who wish to advance their experience with a variety of tap styles. Tuition for each tap course is $40 per person.
