Adult Improv & Tap Summer Classes

May 24, 2019 – Theatre Tuscaloosa Academy is hosting an adult improvisation (improv) introductory workshop June 2 and three improv classes June 10-July 15 in cooperation with Positively Funny Inc. and the PFI Comedy Institute of Birmingham. Theatre Tuscaloosa Academy will also host two adult tap classes June 6-July 18.

“A Taste of Improv,” an introductory workshop, will be held June 2, from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., at the Shelton State Community College (SSCC) Dance Studio and will be hosted for individuals interested in taking one of our expanded six-week classes. Students will learn the power of “Yes, and,” living in the moment, and boosting your self-confidence. The cost of this workshop is $20.

Improv classes will be held June 10-July 15, on Mondays from 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m, and will offer three levels of instruction that range from beginner to advanced. The cost of each individual course is $195 ($175 if you attend “A Taste of Improv”). Improv 1, “Basic Improv: The Fundamentals,” is where students learn the skills needed to create strong improvised scenes, such as building ensemble and object work. Class is to be held in the SSCC Dance Studio. Improv 2, “Intermediate Improv: Scene Work,” will not meet this summer.

Improv 3, “Advanced Improv: Games for Performance,” prepares students to take to the stage for their first performance. Select games performed by the PFI main-stage ensemble cast are mastered for a final performance. Improv 1 & 2 are prerequisites for this course. Class will be held at SSCC in room 1944.

“Mastering Improv,” is for students who have completed beginning, intermediate, and advanced improv. This class is designed to help students master their skills in the areas of Advanced Scene Work, Characters & Environment, and Styles & Genres. Class will be held in SSCC’s Green Room (2913).

Adult tap classes will be held June 6-July 18, on Thursdays. Level 1 will meet from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., and Level 2 will meet from 7:15 p.m. – 8:15 p.m. Adult Tap Level 1 is designed for beginners and/or those with limited tap experience who would like to develop their mastery of basic tap skills. Adult Level 2 is designed for those who have completed our beginning or level 1 tap course or for persons who wish to advance their experience with a variety of tap styles. The cost for each individual course is $30, and both will be held in the SSCC Dance Studio. Classes will not meet on July 4.
