Shelton State Veteran Services Lend Support to Community Event

Tuscaloosa Community Event- Health Care, Employment Opportunities, Education Opportunities, Play, Growth

July 15, 2021 – Working in conjunction with other local sponsors, Shelton State’s Veteran Services and the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center will lend their support to the Tuscaloosa CommUNITY Event at the McDonald Hughes Community Center on Wednesday, July 21 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  The event is free, and all are invited to attend this community event for food, fun, fellowship, and services.

The Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center will be in attendance with representatives to assist with eligibility and enrollment, human resources/job information,  as well as COVID-19 vaccines. If you are a Veteran and have questions about your eligibility, please bring a copy of your DD-214 and we will have staff on-site to assist. If you are a Veteran, spouse of a Veteran, or a caregiver, you are eligible to receive your COVID vaccine at the VA. The Moderna and the Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be available at the event.

The first of its kind, the Tuscaloosa CommUNITY Event will connect citizens of the communities in the West End of Tuscaloosa with other citizens and leaders of the Tuscaloosa County area.  Attendees will have opportunities to participate in fun activities such as basketball dunking contests, 3-point shooting contests, Esports contests, baseball home run contests, and more sport-oriented activities.  Athletes from Shelton State and The University of Alabama will be on hand.

Opportunities for medical care and consultation will be provided by local agencies.  Screenings will be available for a number of conditions.   Those interested may also attend free personal and professional growth workshops from Chesapeake Consulting.  West Alabama Works will be on hand to register attendees in a raffle.  The Alabama Department of Labor and the Tuscaloosa Career Center will be available to discuss career opportunities.  The Tuscaloosa Sheriff’s Department and the Tuscaloosa Police Department will be available to interact with attendees and share information about careers in law enforcement.  Shelton State, Stillman College, The University of Alabama, DCH, and Tuscaloosa City Schools will also be represented.

While supplies last, lunch and refreshments will be provided to all attendees.
