Shelton State Community College Visual Arts Highlights Faculty and Staff Creativity

SSCC Faculty & Staff Art Show

October 4, 2018 – Shelton State Community College’s Visual Arts Department will present a faculty/staff art exhibition October 8 through November 9 in the Cadence Bank Art Gallery on the College’s Martin Campus. The exhibition is free and open to the public Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. A reception honoring the artists will be held on October 25 from 3:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. All are welcome.

The showcased artworks are pieces created by Shelton State faculty and staff from all areas and departments of the College. “It is always exciting to discover that so many faculty and staff members express themselves through different creative outlets outside of their professional life. It shows us that making and creating are innate traits, and all of us need art in our lives,” said Jaia Chen, art instructor and exhibition curator. “In addition to highlighting interesting art, this show is an excellent opportunity for our students and the public to see the creative sides of our faculty and staff.”

Part of Shelton State’s designation as the Community College of the Fine Arts for the state of Alabama, the visual arts department focuses on instruction in art techniques and processes engaging students in creative thinking, self-exploration, and critical evaluation. Courses are designed to provide students with a strong foundation in studio arts and art history. The art program offers experience for students pursuing transfer to a four-year college program, art careers, and/or personal enrichment.

The Cadence Bank Art Gallery, located on the Martin Campus, showcases a changing series of exhibitions of local, regional, and national artists. At the end of each semester, the gallery features a juried student art exhibition with a purchase award.
