Shelton State Community College to offer Heavy Equipment Training at C.A. Fredd Campus through Skills for Success
May 2, 2023 – The Alabama Community College System (ACCS) and Shelton State Community College (SSCC) in partnership with IKAROS and Thompson Tractor recently launched its heavy equipment operator training at the College’s C.A. Fredd Campus on Martin Luther King Blvd. A training session is available on Saturday, May 6 from 7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Heavy equipment operator training is part of the ACCS’s rapid training program, Skills for Success, offered through the ACCS Innovation Center in downtown Decatur, Alabama. The Innovation Center works alongside business and industry leaders to deliver customized, no-cost training for high-demand jobs available across the state. The goal of this program is to provide effective, certified training to Alabamians who are ready to work, but lack necessary skills and the time needed to complete a certification or degree. This program is designed to solve both problems in a shorter period and get individuals to work more quickly.
Prior to participating in heavy equipment training, participants are required to register through the ACCS Innovation Center and complete online modules which teach the concepts, objectives, and safety practices required to operate skid steers in a construction zone setting. Upon successful completion of the online training, applicants can proceed to physical training where they will learn how to operate heavy equipment in a safe manner as required by industry policies and guidelines.
Currently, workers who are trained to operate skid steers and bulldozers are in high demand across the state and have an entry-level pay between $17- $23 per hour. Upon completion of the full online and physical equipment training, students will be awarded an ACCS credential making them immediately eligible to apply for jobs in the construction industry.
