Shelton State Community College to Induct Mohuns at Hall of Fame Ceremony June 21
June 6, 2025 –
Shelton State Athletics is thrilled to announce the induction of Barry and Susan Mohun into the Athletics Hall of Fame on June 21.
Barry Mohun was raised in Montgomery, Alabama, and attended Montgomery Public Schools. He is a 1976 graduate of Sidney Lanier High School where he lettered in both basketball and baseball. He began his collegiate basketball career at Huntingdon College before transferring to Belhaven College to earn a BS degree. He garnered all-conference honors his senior year, playing for the legendary Coach Charlie Ruggs. Barry had coaching stints at St. James School in Montgomery, Alabama, and TR Miller in Brewton, Alabama, and began earning a name for himself in the coaching world. He took time to attend the University of Louisiana-Monroe (ULM) to earn a master’s degree while serving as a graduate assistant coach for the Indians. After ULM, he made stops in Pensacola and Paxton, Florida, before taking the reins at Prattville High School. His 1998 Prattville basketball team is the only team in school history to advance to the Alabama High School Athletic Association Basketball Final Four.
It was in 1998 that he was given the opportunity to take charge of the basketball program at Shelton State. Mohun quickly hit the recruiting trail. He used his contacts in Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, and Louisiana to begin building teams that had a winning mentality and wanted to play for championships. He worked hard at providing his student-athletes with better living arrangements, meal-plans, strength and conditioning programs, up-graded athletic training/medical care, and customized academic advising. When he wasn’t recruiting, he was scouting. Other coaches found it commonplace to see him in their gyms, and the hard work paid off. In 2001, he played for his first ACCC championship. In 2003, he won his first championship and from that point on, his Shelton State teams were winning championships on a regular basis and advancing to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) tournament. In total, Barry won seven Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) Championships, seven runners- up titles, and seven trips to the NJCAA tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas. He had 16 consecutive 20-win seasons and five seasons with 30+ wins. Along the way, Barry won numerous ACCC Coach of the Year Honors, NJCAA Region 5 Coach of the Year Awards, and Birmingham Tip-Off Club Coach of the Year Awards. He retired in 2018 with a collegiate record of 467-138.
Since his Shelton State retirement, Mohun has coached two years at Walton High School in Defuniak Springs, Florida, and seven years at Lowndes Academy. He has over 750 coaching career wins.
Susan Mohun was born in Montgomery, Alabama, to Thomas and Maxine Coker. She was raised in Lowndesboro, attended Lowndes Academy, and is a 1982 graduate. She attended The University of Alabama, earning a BS degree, followed by Troy University to obtain a master’s degree in education. Susan spent 13 years in the classrooms of Montgomery, Autauga, and Tuscaloosa Counties.
In 1999, Dr. Tom Umphrey recruited her to Shelton State to join her husband, Barry. Her first official title was Athletic Coordinator. Susan was charged with consolidating many different aspects of the athletic department, including but not limited to academic advising for student-athletes, budgets, travel, publicity, and tournaments. During this time, Shelton State was fielding teams in Women’s Soccer, Men’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Softball, and Baseball. She assisted with the publishing of media guides for each sport and her office became the hub for the Athletic Department. She helped establish a Start-Up Advising Day designed for student-athletes, started a competitive cheerleading team, added a dance team, began Shelton State Homecoming activities, held All-Star Basketball games on campus, and coordinated/hosted Alabama Community College Conference Basketball Championships. Susan’s role with the College grew when she was named Assistant Dean of Students for Athletics and Student Activities.
A new area of the College was designed on the second floor to house the athletic offices and student clubs and organizations. Susan assisted coaches with all aspects of their programs and was a vital piece of many student-athletes’ time on the Shelton State campus. She coordinated the Adopt-A-School program and planned events and activities that took Shelton State athletes into local elementary and high schools and arranged tours of the Shelton State campus for partner schools. She served as a liaison to high school athletes who were being recruited to Shelton State and was a point of contact for 4- year coaches who were recruiting athletes to join their programs. Susan was instrumental in giving Shelton State athletics a foundation of excellence, and she worked tirelessly for both the coaches and the student-athletes during her 16 years at the College.
Since her retirement, Susan has worked part-time at Lowndes Academy. She stays busy with church and community endeavors, but the majority of her time is spent being SuSu to her two grandsons, and she has two more on the way.
