Shelton State Community College to Host Eighth Annual BEST Robotics Competition
October 18, 2019 – Shelton State Community College will host the eighth Shelton’s BEST Robotics Competition on Friday and Saturday, October 25 and 26. Known as “Game Day,” events on Saturday, October 26 will take place from 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Game Day activities are open to the public. Admission is free, and community members are invited to volunteer or attend.
Twenty-two schools will compete at Shelton’s BEST 2019. This year’s theme, “Off the Grid,” requires participants to create an all-purpose, robotic system capable of repairing an electric grid in the event of a catastrophe. These robotic systems must be able to enter potentially dangerous areas to make repairs, clear debris, and deliver equipment.
BEST is a non-profit, volunteer-based program designed to inspire students through competitive robotic design. Through exploration and creativity, student teams are encouraged to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines. Additionally, Shelton’s BEST enhances marketing-based skills. The marketing category of competition allows students to brand and advertise their school’s robotic concept. All teams have the opportunity to be mentored by engineers and technical professionals from local industry.
The top five teams participating at Shelton’s BEST will qualify to compete at South’s BEST at Auburn University in December.
