Shelton State Community College to Host Annual Realizing the Dream Essay and Art Contest

January 20, 2022 – Part of ongoing “Realizing the Dream” events, Shelton State Community College will host the annual essay and art contest March 14 – April 10, 2022.  Essays and art will be focused on this year’s theme, “Realizing the Dream through Kindness and Respect for Others.”   Selected winners will be invited to the Realizing the Dream Performing Arts event on Monday, April 4, 2022, at 5:30 p.m. at the Cadence Bank Art Gallery on the College’s Martin Campus.

 

Entries for the essay and art contest may be submitted until February 1, 2022.  Submission requirements include composing a 500-word essay or creating a work of art, both of which should reflect the theme.  All entries must be created by middle or high school students.  For complete information about submitting an entry, visit Realizing the Dream Essay and Art Contest 2022.

 

“The Shelton State Fine Arts Department is honored to host the annual Realizing the Dream Art and Essay contest on the walls of our Cadence Bank Art Gallery,” states Carson Grubaugh, Shelton State Art Instructor and one of the judges for this year’s contest. “This is a precious opportunity for the community to celebrate the artistic talents of local youth as they lead the way towards the Dream with their creative expressions.”

 

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Realizing the Dream Committee – comprised of representatives from Stillman College, Shelton State Community College, Tuscaloosa’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and The University of Alabama – exists to raise consciousness about injustice and promote human equality, peace and social justice by creating educational and cultural opportunities for growth, empowerment and social change so that every person may experience the bounty of life’s abundant possibilities.   The theme of Realizing the Dream events changes annually to be relevant to current circumstances, and each year’s theme is designed to unify the community.
