December 12, 2022 – Shelton State Community College (SSCC) will honor employees and directors of local non-profit organizations on Friday, December 16, at 10:00 a.m. at the C.A. Fredd Campus.  Those being recognized are graduates of the College’s recent Nonprofit Leadership Academy hosted by Dean of Community Affairs Joe Eatmon.

Since October, SSCC has hosted training through the Nonprofit Leadership Academy. Participants were offered nine contact hours of training. Seven topics were covered in one-hour sessions, and grant writing was covered in a two-hour session. Topics for the one-hour sessions included an overview of nonprofits, an overview of nonprofit boards, transformational leadership, nonprofit marketing and communication, fundraising for nonprofits, SWOT analysis, and nonprofit budgeting. Class materials, instruction, and meals were provided at no charge.

The award-winning curriculum for the Nonprofit Leadership Academy was developed and presented by the College’s Director of Grants, Margaret Purcell. According to Purcell, “Nonprofit organizations do exceptional work, yet those who so significantly impact their communities often have no formal training in the fundamentals of nonprofit management. Imagine what they could do if given the tools needed to truly thrive.”

As part of the Academy, participants were required to apply the concepts presented to real life situations.  A certificate was awarded to each participant after completion of a course, and individuals who completed the full length of the course will receive a graduation certificate at Friday’s special event.
