Shelton State Community College Terrific Tuesday Concert Series to Host Diane Boyd Schultz and Jennifer Griffith Cowgill

Terrific Tuesday Concert Series

October 11, 2018 – Shelton State Community College’s Terrific Tuesday Concert Series will host flutist and piccoloist Diane Boyd Schultz and soprano Jennifer Griffith Cowgill on Tuesday, October 16 at 1:00 p.m. in the Martin Campus Alabama Power Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.

 

Flutist and piccoloist Diane Boyd Schultz established her career through solo and chamber performances in the United States, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, Romania, and Austria. She has performed as flutist and piccoloist of the Dallas Bach Society, Alabama Symphony, Terre Haute Symphony, Tuscaloosa Symphony, Shreveport Symphony, and Richardson Symphony Orchestras. She has also recorded for the Emmy award-winning documentary Weathered Secrets and for incidental music for the play Death of a Salesman.

 

She has presented masterclasses and clinics in England, Québec, the Bahamas, Cuba, Michigan, Missouri, Illinois, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arizona, Texas, Ohio, Colorado, New York, Oklahoma, and Florida. A Rotary International Scholar, she studied at McGill University in Montréal, and she has received grants to pursue her interest in studying and commissioning new works for flute and piccolo by American composers. She performed for the world premieres of Chris Brubeck’s Hermitage Cats Save the Day at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, and at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C. Her articles have appeared in Flute Talk, Pan, and Instrumentalist.

 

Schultz is professor of flute of the School of Music at The University of Alabama where she is also a member of the Capstone Wind Quintet. Previously, she was on the faculties of Stephen F. Austin and Eastern Illinois Universities. She is a Yamaha Performing Artist.

 

Soprano Jennifer Griffith Cowgill is Associate Professor of Voice at Marywood University. Prior to Marywood, she was an Associate Professor of Voice at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Dr. Cowgill is in increasing demand as a vocal pedagogy lecturer and clinician and has presented master classes and presentations in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Ohio, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi, New York, Louisiana, and recently in the United Kingdom. Students from her studio are often winners in competitions including the NATS and NATSAA competitions and have earned opera apprenticeship opportunities and music theatre positions throughout the country. As a soprano, she has performed a wide variety of repertoire in recital, concert, opera, and musical theater throughout the United States. Her recent opera roles include the role of Hannah in the Merry Widow, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, and Pamina in The Magic Flute. Dr. Cowgill received the Doctor of Music in vocal performance from Florida State University and the Master of Music from Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from Oberlin Conservatory where she studied with the internationally renowned voice pedagogue Richard Miller.

 

Shelton State’s Terrific Tuesday Concert Series is designed to showcase a variety of repertory styles. Weekly performances are offered by guest artists as well as Shelton State faculty and students.
