Shelton State Community College Team Wins First Place at Regional Tournament

December 6, 2018 – Shelton’s BEST team Evangel Christian School won First Place BEST Game Award at the South’s BEST Regional Tournament held at Auburn University on December 1 and 2.

Located in Alabaster, Alabama, Evangel Christian School has participated in BEST Robotics for seven years. The team, led by coach Stephen Daniels, consists of 39 students in grades six through twelve. The team also won the Igus Top Gun Award for scoring the most points in a single round by accumulating 1,530 points in three minutes using the robot they built and designed.

“The BEST program has been a valuable educational opportunity for our students,” said Daniels. “It has helped several students define their post-high school career paths.”

This year’s game theme was “Current Events” and challenged students to create a robot capable of collecting garbage from the ocean floor, gyres, and ocean currents while saving and relocating sea life to safety zones.

Shelton’s BEST annual engineering competition is in its seventh year and is hosted each October at Shelton State Community College. South’s BEST is the next level of competition for Shelton’s BEST award winners. South’s BEST brings together the top sixty teams from hubs in five states and incorporates robotics, engineering, marketing presentations, and marketing exhibits.
