Shelton State Community College Student Completes GED While Enrolled in College Courses

January 25, 2022 – A Shelton State Community College Ability to Benefit (ATB) student, James Solomon, recently became the first ATB student to complete his GED while co-enrolled in college credit classes.

After joining the College’s Adult Education program in fall 2021, Solomon first began taking college courses by co-enrolling in the Ready to Work program.  Successfully juggling classes for both, he passed two GED test components while also obtaining an Alabama Certified Worker and National Career Readiness Certificate.  Upon completion of Ready to Work, Solomon received a grant to cover eight hours of college credit courses for spring 2022.  He is currently attending classes in the culinary arts program, and as of January 19, he is a GED graduate.

“James is always hungry for another challenge,” states Kristen Bobo, the College’s Adult Education Director.  After a conversation indicating his desire to be a chef despite not finishing school, Bobo worked with Solomon to provide a path toward his goal.  “When I explained that he could attend culinary school and finish his GED simultaneously, it was as though a light came on.  By giving him direction, we’re helping him succeed.”

The College’s Adult Education Site Coordinator, Jenna Lofthus, recognized Solomon’s ambition immediately.  “James was immediately hooked when he entered the culinary lab and spoke with our instructors and students.  He could see his path taking shape.” Lofthus said that the process of co-enrollment allowed James to explore his occupational route while accomplishing milestones along the way.  “At 17, he was stacking credentials and planning his future without really realizing it because he enjoyed it so much.”

“The Adult Education program here at SSCC has helped me so much, I can’t even put it into words,” said Solomon.  “My advice to anyone is to stay focused on your goal, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy life in the process.  I don’t know what I would have done if I didn’t have the people here in Adult Education to help me succeed.”

In addition to Bobo and Lofthus, Solomon has the support of other organizations in West Alabama.  Through cooperative relationships with Easterseals of West Alabama Future Promise Youth and the Tuscaloosa Area Career Center, Solomon received job coaching, transportation services, incentives, and mentoring.

“It is important to note that stories like James’ are not unique,” said Bobo.  “We know that many people could benefit from the support our program provides and we are ready!”
