Shelton State Community College Student Assigned Position with Department of Conservation and Natural Resources

February 7, 2022 – Shelton State Community College student Brittany Barner recently received notification of a co-op offer through the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.  This opportunity was made available by the Alabama HBCU Co-Op Program through the Governor’s Office of Minority Affairs.

Barner is currently working on her associate in science degree at the College and has been accepted to Mississippi State University (MSU) for the fall semester where she will study microbiology in a pre-veterinarian track. While enrolled at MSU, Barner will work alongside Fred Harders, Assistant Director of the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division.

“Brittany handles all responsibilities with grace and composure that you do not often see in a college student, and I am confident she will tackle this opportunity with the same dedication,” said Amy Henderson, Shelton State’s Director of Career Services.  “Brittany is a wonderful example of the type of student Shelton State Community College is producing. I am thrilled for her.”

As she worked toward this goal, Barner felt supported and prepared.  “It is fantastic having a group dedicated to making sure students are getting to see the real-world effect of education,” she stated.

A vital member of the Alabama Community College System, Shelton State Community College is committed to creating new opportunities for West Alabama.  “With a renewed focus on meeting the needs of its customers, the College offers innovative solutions and an enhanced approach to customized education, training, and community impact,” states President Brad Newman.  “Collectively, we will be excellent in each!”
