Shelton State receives $40,000 donation from Alabama Power Foundation

April 21, 2022 – Shelton State Community College has received a $40,000 donation from the Alabama Power Foundation.  Designated as financial support for healthcare programs, the donation will be applied to those programs housed at the College’s HBCU site, the C.A. Fredd Campus.  A longtime partner of Shelton State, the Alabama Power Foundation’s donation will further efforts to enhance diversity in West Alabama.

Through this generous gift, scholarships will be awarded to students from underrepresented minority groups.  A special emphasis will be placed on recruiting diverse students from rural communities in West Alabama and supporting the growing needs of healthcare in the facilities of those regions.  Awards will cover tuition, fees, and books for the first year of their respective healthcare program.

“We are pleased to accept this gift and apply it in ways that benefit not only our students, but our community,” shared Dr. Chris Cox, the College’s Interim President.  “The programs housed at our C.A. Fredd Campus are preparing tomorrow’s workforce, and additional support from the Alabama Power Foundation ensures increased placement of highly skilled employees who are ready on day-one.”

Shelton State’s C.A. Fredd Campus is home to three health-related programs supported by this funding.  The areas of study are respiratory therapy, health information technology, and the College’s newest health-related program, medical laboratory technician.

“Shelton State Community College is a longtime partner of Alabama Power, and we are proud to support the College’s efforts to enhance diversity in our communities,” said Alabama Power Western Division Area Manager, Joseph Brown.  “The Alabama Power Foundation’s gift will allow the College to provide scholarships to minority students and enhance programs at the C.A. Fredd Campus, while also addressing the critical need for healthcare workers in our rural communities.  We look forward to continuing this partnership with Dr. Cox and his team to create more equitable opportunities in West Alabama.”
