Shelton State Community College Phi Theta Kappa Receives Recognition

PTK Reach Reward 2021

March 1, 2021 – Shelton State Community College’s (SSCC) Alpha Epsilon Iota chapter of Phi Theta kappa was recently named a 2021 REACH Chapter.

Phi Theta Kappa’s REACH (Recognizing Excellence in Acceptance and Completion with Honors) Reward program recognizes and rewards Phi Theta Kappa chapters that excel in membership development. The program encourages PTK membership by rewarding chapters who achieve or exceed 15 percent for their membership acceptance rate. Created to support the mission of Phi Theta Kappa, the REACH Reward program seeks to offer benefits of membership — scholarships and increased opportunities for engagement with peers and faculty on campus, which lead to higher rates of completion – to as many students as possible.

“Being named a Reach Chapter is a special honor, especially considering the trials 2020 confronted us with,” stated chapter advisor, Dr. Kevin Windham. “The chapter was unable to recruit students through traditional face-to-face interaction, so we were forced to rely on email and social media. Fortunately, the academic advisors and faculty members at the College are great supporters of PTK and encouraged students to join. Without their help we would not have reached our 24-percent acceptance rate, which is higher than the Alabama Region, the southeast division, and of PTK international.”

Members of SSCC’s administration were quick to acknowledge the work of chapter advisors, Dr. Windham and Shywanda Moore, and SSCC PTK students. “We are fortunate to have Dr. Windham and Mrs. Moore as PTK advisors at the College,” noted Dr. Joye Jones, Dean of Instruction. “They work hard to ensure students have an outstanding educational and personal experience in PTK.”

Acting President Bryan Helms echoed these sentiments, “Under tremendous leadership, our PTK students are striving for excellence and being acknowledged for it. I am exceedingly proud.”

Dr. Windham takes praise in stride and focuses mainly on the continued growth of the Alpha Epsilon Iota chapter. “Our chapter motto is ‘We are good, smart people at a great College who can do amazing things,” stated Windham. “Being named a Reach Chapter means we have more members who can engage in making that motto a daily reality.”
