April 30, 2018 – Phi Theta Kappa International held its annual convention in April in Kansas City, Missouri. Shelton State Community College’s Alpha Epsilon Iota chapter members and advisors attended the convention.

At the Convention’s Advisor Luncheon, chapter advisor Dr. Kevin Windham was honored with the Dr. Jo Marshall Award. The Marshall Award Program encourages personal leadership growth of Phi Theta Kappa chapter advisors by providing financial support for the completion of a project that builds on past leadership experiences, promotes personal leadership growth (beyond the completion of professional degrees), and leads to the empowerment of others to reach their leadership potential. For the purpose of this application, personal professional growth is defined as advancement, improvement, increase in knowledge, or general progress towards maturity in one’s leadership potential, pursued out of the individual desire for betterment or personal interest in the undertaking.

The Marshall Award Program rewards growth potential by awarding funding based on an applicant’s project proposal and the applicant’s potential for personal professional growth through completion of the project. Dr. Windham’s project topic, entitled “Alabama History: Leadership in Action,” will see him becoming active in the Alabama Historical Society, submitting articles for publication, and developing an Alabama history course that incorporates videos created from places of historical relevance. For Windham, the Marshall Award is the pinnacle of his academic career and a personal best as he has considered Dr. Marshall a mentor for nearly 25 years.

“Receiving the Marshall Award means the world to me; this is the ultimate academic accolade,” said Windham. “Dr. Marshall is such a special person and a model leader. To have an award with her name on it and have it presented it by her is simply awesome. She has pushed me—from even when I was a student—toward success, and I’ll never be able to repay her for that. I just hope she knows what she means to me and how much I look up to her.”
