Shelton State Community College Music Department Represents College at State Events

November 14, 2018 – The Shelton State Community College (SSCC) Music Department recently represented the College at two state music events. The Shelton State Jazz Ensemble performed at the Gadsden State Community College Jazz Festival on Thursday, November 8. The Shelton Singers performed at the American Choral Directors Association’s Collegiate Choral Festival on Tuesday, November 13.

The Gadsden State Community College Jazz Festival on Thursday, November 8 was an all-day festival held at the Wallace Hall Fine Arts Center in Gadsden, Alabama. The Shelton State Jazz Ensemble, led by Dr. Elijah Pugh, performed the following pieces: “Blues in Hos Flat,” “Autumn Leaves,” “Round Midnight,” “88 Basie Street,” “Night Train,” and “Dizzy Atmosphere.” SSCC Jazz Ensemble members also participated in music clinics and enjoyed performances by other colleges and guest artists that included Jason Marsalis, Jeffery Miller, and Bria Skonberg.

The Collegiate Choral Festival was hosted by Alabama ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) and is held annually in the fall semester. The Festival provides the opportunity for concert choirs from Alabama two- and four- year institutions to perform selected repertoire and work with a clinician on those pieces after their performance. An annual event for the Shelton Singers, Dr. Mark Brown directed the group in singing “The Dream Keeper,” “When Music Fills the Air,” and “Come Back to Me in Dreams.”

The Shelton State Jazz Ensemble and the Shelton Singers are part of Shelton State’s Music Department. Remaining public performances for the fall semester include the Annual Holiday Tree Lighting on November 27 at 1:00 p.m. in the Martin Campus Atrium and the Music Department Christmas Concert on December 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Martin Campus Bean-Brown Theatre. Both events are free and open to the public.
