October 10, 2018 – The Shelton State Music Department will present Poetry in Music on Tuesday, October 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bean-Brown Theatre on the Martin Campus of Shelton State Community College. General admission is $10 and $7 for students with a valid Shelton State ID. Tickets may be purchased at the Shelton State Box Office prior to the event or at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Tuscaloosa Music Club Scholarship.

The Poetry in Music concert will feature the Shelton Singers directed by Dr. Mark Brown and accompanied by Dr. Alex Benford. The concert features the reading and choral settings of poetry. Poems will first be read by Shelton State faculty, and Shelton Singers will then perform the choral setting of the text. The Shelton Singers will perform pieces by the following composers: Lee Dengler, Rollo Dillworth, Owen Goldsmith, John Michael Trotta, Mark Burrows, Gweneth Walker, and Jeffrey Ames. Featured poets will include Charles Dickens, Rabindranath Tagore, Langston Hughes, and Christina Rosetti. Two other songs will feature traditional African and Irish texts. Participating Shelton State faculty will be Kevin Burns, Michael Carr, Blake Everett, Adam Miller, and retired English faculty member Susan Bamberg.

Proceeds for the concert will benefit the Tuscaloosa Music Club Scholarship awarded annually by the Shelton State Foundation. The concert will feature present and former scholarship recipients. Kevin Beck, former scholarship recipient, will sing Come Read and See Me by Richard Hunley. Sean Jones, current scholarship recipient, will sing Whither Must I Wander by Robert Louis Stevenson.

“This concert is always a highlight for the music department because it features a collaborative effort with Shelton State faculty and staff and provides a unique experience for audience members,” said Lillian Roberts, Fine Arts Division Chair. “This year’s concert is even more special because proceeds will be donation to the Tuscaloosa Music Scholarship. I see first-hand the different this scholarship makes, and it is rewarding to help continue that effort.”
