October 20, 2017 – Shelton State Community College will host the sixth Shelton’s BEST Robotics Competition on Friday and Saturday, October 27 and 28. Known as “Game Day,” events on Saturday, October 28 will take place from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Game Day activities are open to the public and will include door prizes and a costume contest. Admission is free, and community members are invited to volunteer or attend.

Twenty-two schools from West Alabama will compete at the 2017 event. This year’s theme, “Crossfire,” is part of BEST, Inc.’s organization-wide fire safety initiative. Throughout its history, BEST has kept safety the number one priority. In line with this, Crossfire will explore robot intervention in industrial fire emergencies.

BEST is a non-profit, volunteer-based program designed to inspire students through competitive robotic design. Through exploration and creativity, student teams are encouraged to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines. Additionally, Shelton’s BEST enhances marketing-based skills. The marketing category of competition allows students to brand and advertise their school’s robotic concept. All teams have the opportunity to be mentored by engineers and technical professionals from local industry.

The top four teams participating at Shelton’s BEST will qualify to compete at South’s BEST at Auburn University in December.
