Shelton State Community College Hosts Hands-on Job Training this Saturday

ACCS Innovation Center

February 25, 2022 – Local restauranteur, Alabama Labor Secretary, and others to join students as they complete new rapid, job training program for in-demand jobs

More than a dozen students will receive free hands-on training for jobs in Food and Beverage Services at Shelton State Community College on Saturday as part of the Alabama Community College System’s new rapid training program. The program, which was officially launched earlier this month, works alongside the state’s hospitality and tourism businesses to create customized training for jobs that are in-demand.

Trainees will be learning skills from restauranteur Jheovanny Gomez, co-owner of the popular Jalapeños Mexican Grill with locations in Tuscaloosa and Northport.

In addition, students will hear from Alabama Secretary of Labor Fitzgerald Washington and Shelton State Community College Interim President Dr. Chris Cox.

Members of the media are invited to attend and observe the training and to interview Gomez, Secretary Washington, and President Cox.

Students complete most of the training online and will finish the rapid training program with the hands-on class this Saturday. Upon completion, students will be awarded the ACCS credential so employers know they are job-ready.

The Food and Beverage rapid training course has already proven successful. One-hundred percent of students who went through Food and Beverage training at Coastal Alabama Community College last month were matched with jobs and hired upon completion of the course.
