Shelton State Community College Health Information Technology Announces Update

November 9, 2020 – Shelton State Community College Health Information Technology (HIT) has announced that its program can now be completed virtually. With all courses now available online, this program is the first in the College’s Heath Services area to be available in this format.

“We are very excited to be able to offer this opportunity to potential students,” said Joan Wilder, the program’s director. “We’ve seen over the last few months what virtual and online options can provide, and we are pleased that students interested in the healthcare field can prepare themselves in a safe and convenient way.”

Although the application period for HIT doesn’t begin until February 1, students are encouraged to take advantage of the College’s upcoming “BOGO” community scholarship in the spring. “This is a perfect time to take prerequisite courses ahead of the program,” stated Wilder. With the “buy one, get one” community scholarship option for spring 2021. Students can take up to nine (9) credit hours tuition-free. Registration for spring is currently open.

Health Information Technology (HIT) professionals acquire, organize, and manage health information data. They ensure quality, accuracy, accessibility, and security in both paper and electronic systems. They use various classification systems to code and categorize patient information for insurance reimbursement purposes, databases and registries, and maintenance of patients’ medical treatment histories.

Spacing for the program is limited to twenty-five participants, and students are required to attend a mandatory health information program session prior to submitting an application.
