Shelton State Community College Celebrates Bibb Medical Center Apprentices at Signing Day Event
January 23, 2025 – Shelton State Community College (SSCC) hosted a commemorative signing day to welcome the College’s newest nursing apprentice at Bibb Medical Center (BMC) in Centreville, Alabama today.
SSCC nursing student Krista Yeager will receive on-the-job training while completing her nursing coursework, labs, and simulations at the College’s Bibb Campus. The program provides paid learning and clinical hours for candidates.
With support from the Alabama Office of Apprenticeships, the nursing apprenticeship program welcomed its first cohort in 2024. Kamolyut Mengumpun, Kendra Hoskins, and Carson Gibbs have completed the program and are now working at BMC. The ceremony also marked the culmination of the apprenticeship program for the inaugural cohort.
“It is a proud day to not only welcome our newest apprentice but also to see the success of our first group of students as they wrap up their training,” said Dr. Jonathan Koh, SSCC President. “This cutting-edge program is serving as an example to others in our state and across the country as a model for the seamless transition for nursing students from the classroom to the nursing field.”
In partnership since 2022, Shelton State and BMC created the practical nursing program at Bibb Medical Center to increase the number of skilled nurses in West Alabama.
BMC CEO Joseph Marchant says the collaboration between SSCC and BMC has opened a pathway for more nursing opportunities.
“Since its inception, dozens of LPN graduates got their start in healthcare with teams across West Alabama,” said Marchant. “We appreciate all the partners that have allowed us to reach this point.”
