Shelton State Community College Announces Spring 2018 Graduates and Honors

May 14, 2018 – Commencement exercises for Shelton State Community College were held on Thursday, May 3 and Friday, May 4 at the Martin Campus. President Bill Ashley, Ed. D., presided over each event.

 

At the College’s graduation ceremony, Dr. Charles “Chuck” Karr, University of Alabama Dean of the College of Engineering, delivered the commencement address. A total of 285 students were acknowledged for completion including 19 short-term certificate recipients, 9 certificate recipients, 166 associate in applied science degree recipients, and 91 associate in arts/science recipients.

 

Ninety-seven of the associate in applied science degree recipients were candidates for nursing. This was the largest graduating class of nurses in Shelton State’s health services programs in over twenty years. Career-technical programs with multiple graduates included automotive service technology, business office management, child development, culinary arts, engineering graphics and design, industrial electronics technology, industrial maintenance technology, management and supervision, salon and spa management, welding, and wellness exercise instruction.

 

Also part of the 2018 commencement events, Honors Convocation was held earlier the same day. The accomplishments of Shelton State students were celebrated, and College award recipients were named. The five major College awards were given to the following students:

H.I. James Outstanding Technical Student Award – Antheletha Willis

I.W. Mitchell Outstanding Technical Student Award – Taylor Rodgers

Norman C. Cephus Special Achievement Award – Taylor Rodgers

Thomas E. Umphrey Outstanding Freshman Award – Ashton Palmer

Leo Sumner Outstanding Sophomore Award – Tyler Yarbrough

 

In addition to College awards, students receiving transfer and Shelton State Foundation scholarships were recognized. The Shelton State Foundation awarded 89 scholarships totaling $130,000. Seventeen four-year colleges were represented in the awarding of transfer scholarships.

 

The graduating students listed below completed the requirements for certificates or degrees at the conclusion of the spring 2018 semester. All student hometowns are in the state of Alabama unless otherwise indicated.
