Shelton State Community College Announces 2022 Holiday Happenings

November 11, 2022 – Shelton State Community College (SSCC) has announced its schedule of holiday happenings for 2022.

 

On Friday, November 11, both campuses will be closed in observance of Veterans Day.  Both campuses will also be closed Wednesday, November 23, through Friday, November 25 for Thanksgiving. The College’s regular hours of operation will resume on Monday, November 28.

 

On Tuesday, November 29, the SSCC Music Department will host the College’s Annual Tree Lighting and Sing-Along at 1:00 p.m. in the Martin Campus Atrium. Sacred and secular holiday pieces will be performed, and the audience will participate in a sing-along. The Music Department will present its annual Christmas Concert on Thursday, December 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Martin Campus Atrium. Featuring the Shelton Singers and the Shelton State Jazz Ensemble, both events are free and open to the public.

 

The Tree Lighting event will also highlight the College’s Here Comes Santa Claus annual giving campaign. Now in its twelfth year, Here Comes Santa Claus is sponsored by the Shelton State Ambassadors and allows students, faculty, staff, and community members to assist those in need. Donations will be accepted through Friday, December 9. On Saturday, December 3, SSCC Athletics will host Cookies & Crafts with Santa from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. on the Martin Campus. Open to children ages 10 years and under, this event promises to be a great start to the holiday season. Children will participate in games, and refreshments of doughnuts and drinks will be served. Admission is $20 per child and $5 per adult. (All children must be accompanied by an adult.) Space is limited to the first 100 registrants. Theatre Tuscaloosa’s The Great Christmas Cookie Bake-Off will run Friday, December 9, through Sunday, December 18.  Times and prices vary. Visit Theatre Tuscaloosa for additional information.

 

Tuscaloosa CommUNITY Fest will be held at the McDonald Hughes Community Center on Saturday, December 10 from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The event will feature local vendors, games and activities for children, live DJs, food trucks, and a 3-on-3 basketball tournament with a $2,000 prize. While the event is free, attendees are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy for local Tuscaloosa families.

 

On Monday, December 12, the Shelton Singers will join the Prentice Concert Chorale and the Alabama Choir School Choirs in performing with the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra’s annual holiday concert. The concert will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Moody Music Building on the campus of The University of Alabama. Admission will be charged. The College will be closed for the holidays beginning Friday, December 23 through Tuesday, January 3. Regular hours of operation will resume on Wednesday, January 4 with spring classes beginning on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.
