SSCC & UWA Signing Day

July 28, 2020 – On Monday, July 27, 2020, Shelton State Community College (SSCC) and the University of West Alabama (UWA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishing clearly defined transfer information for SSCC students who wish to continue their education at UWA.

According to the terms of the MOU, the University of West Alabama will guarantee admission to all SSCC students based on a 2.0 GPA and forty-five transferable credit hours or completion of an associate degree. Pre-transfer advising will be provided along with opportunities for academic and housing scholarships.

The MOU is intended to assist both institutions in their efforts to better serve students.

“Both of these colleges are large parts of this region,” stated Bryan Helms, Acting President at Shelton State stated at Monday’s signing. “UWA has a reputation for academic excellence, and we appreciate an opportunity for our current and future students to benefit from this agreement. This is a terrific addition to our shared community.”

Also in attendance, the University of West Alabama’s President, Dr. Ken Tucker, Ph.D., shared his excitement about the memorandum. “Shelton State and UWA have similar student bases, and we’ve always enjoyed a strong relationship. This partnership takes that to the next level by making transfer easier through added incentives. We are very excited and appreciative of this opportunity.”

As part of the MOU, academic scholarships will be available to SSCC students with a 3.0 or better GPA. These scholarships will be $3,000 – $4,000 per year and renewable for up to four consecutive semesters. Additionally, SSCC students who receive academic scholarships will also be eligible to apply for $2,000 first year housing scholarships.
