Shelton State Community College Adult Education Wraps Up Challenge Week

2021 Shelton State Adult Education Challenge Week

September 24, 2021 – In accordance with a proclamation from Governor Kay Ivey, Shelton State Community College’s Adult Education recently celebrated Adult & Family Literacy Week through a weeklong set of activities designed to encourage students.  “Challenge Yourself Week” began on Monday, September 19 and concluded on Friday, September 24.

Activities for “Challenge Yourself Week” included Monday’s GED Ready Challenge Day, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s College Ready Challenge, and Thursday’s Career Ready Challenge.  Students completed tasks ranging from completing the GED practice test to passing ACT WorkKeys.  Over the course of the week, the College administered twenty-seven GED Ready tests, ten GED tests, and twenty-three WorkKeys tests.  Additionally, fifteen new students attended orientation and earned their first Northstar Digital Literacy Certification.

Also called “Show-Up and Show-Out,” students spent the week completing challenges and participating in activities that showcased the importance of education.  On Tuesday, Adult Education students and the College’s Pre-K students shared reading time together with books provided by the Literacy Council of West Alabama and snacks donated by Shelton State Project Literacy Fund.  On Thursday, students met with President Brad Newman before speaking with partners at the Tuscaloosa Area Career Center.

All activities were part of the National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week which raises public awareness about the need for and value of adult education and family literacy.  Its goal is to increase financial and societal support for access to basic education programs for U.S. adults with low literacy, numeracy, and digital skills.  Advocates across the country use this opportunity to elevate adult education and family literacy nationwide with policymakers, the media, and the community.

“Turning Adult & Family Literacy Week into a challenge was a brand-new venture for those of us in Adult Education, and it definitely paid off,” said Adult Education Director Kristen Bobo.  “Our students were super-motivated by the challenge aspect of the week, and we can’t wait to challenge them to even bigger things in the coming weeks and months.  It is definitely an exciting time for us and for our students.”

SSCC Adult Education will host another “Challenge Yourself Week” beginning October 4.  For more information about participation, contact Kristen Bobo at 205.391.2638 or kbobo@sheltonstate.edu.
