Shelton State Community College Adult Education Celebrates Successful Challenge Event

February 15, 2022 – Shelton State Community College Adult Education marked another successful challenge event on February 14 with students working toward their GED.  For this challenge, thirty students took GED Ready practice tests, and six students completed the ACT WorkKeys test.

Similar to previous challenge events hosted by Shelton State Adult Education, the “Celebrating You Challenge” was designed to encourage students to move forward in the GED process by completing various testing components. With support from the Shelton State Foundation, Shelton State Career Services, Shelton State Student Services, Shelton State Workforce Development, and the Tuscaloosa Area Career Center, students were also provided valuable resources for taking next steps in their educations.

Adult Education student DeAnthony Colvin is balancing work and school in order to complete his GED.  Although he was anxious about testing, Colvin surprised himself with his accomplishments over the course of the day.  “I told my wife that [Adult Education Director] Ms. Bobo challenged me to take the test, and I was nervous, but I did it!” Colvin successfully passed the GED Ready Math test and received a GED test voucher.  With only this remaining section to pass, Colvin looks forward to joining the Shelton State welding program upon completion.

“I am extremely proud of DeAnthony and all of the students who worked so hard,” stated Kristen Bobo, SSCC Adult Education Director. “The challenge was more than a day of testing success.  I heard students say they were proud of themselves, and that alone is a great reward!”

Shelton State Adult Education covers Bibb and Tuscaloosa Counties. Adult Education staff members will host a special Challenge Day for Bibb County students on Thursday, February 17 in the Brent Elementary classroom.
