Shelton State Community College Adult Education Celebrates Students Co-Enrolled for Fall Semester

Adult Education Co-Enrolled Students

September 2, 2022 – Shelton State Community College (SSCC) Adult Education recently celebrated four students who began their college career prior to completing their GED.  The College’s process of co-enrollment allows students to attend college classes concurrently while earning a GED or non-traditional diploma.

On August 25, 2022, four SSCC Adult Education co-enrollment students were given college “starter bags” to wish them continued success in the fall semester. Of these four co-enrolled students, two students have already earned their diplomas, and two are halfway there! The group as a whole represents varied departments at the College including adult education, culinary arts, psychology, and welding.

Shelton State Community College’s (SSCC) admission policy defines the College as an open admission institution. All students who have earned a high school diploma or GED are eligible for admission. Applicants without a high school diploma or GED are referred to Adult Education. The College currently offers dual enrollment entry for qualifying students concurrently enrolled in high school. The College also now provides co-enrollment opportunities for qualifying students to concurrently attend credit and/or non-credit courses while earning a GED or Non-Traditional High School Diploma on a path to an in-demand career path.

Adult Education students can enter college credit and non-credit courses through co-enrollment. Students working towards a GED or Non-traditional High School Diploma can apply for co-enrollment once they determine a career pathway and meet academic eligibility (based on their program of study). Students are required to attend adult education classes a minimum of six hours a week and college classes six hours a week to be co-enrolled students. Once the GED or the Non-traditional High School Diploma is completed, a student will have freshman status.

Co-enrollment gives adult education students incentive to continue working towards their career goals as they complete their high school equivalency credentials. Adding this piece to SSCC Adult Education’s career pathway options has offered students additional workforce opportunities.

“These students are perfect examples of the benefits of modifying education processes in ways that make sense not only for the student, but for the community and workforce,” stated Kristen Bobo, SSCC Adult Education Director.
