September 12, 2022 – Classes begin tomorrow for Shelton State Community College’s (SSCC) newest practical nursing (PN) students.  Students will attend classes at the Bibb Medical Center (BMC) in Centreville.  The PN program is a partnership between SSCC and BMC to prepare nurses and strengthen the workforce in West Alabama.

A new student orientation was held on Tuesday, August 23 at BMC’s newly renovated clinical space.  The cohort will receive financial assistance to cover tuition, fees, books, and other expenses.  Students who successfully complete the PN program will receive jobs offers after graduation and must commit to working for two (2) years as practical nurses at BMC.

Admitted student Kelsea Hogeland says the PN program is helping her fulfill a lifelong dream.  “I have always wanted to be a nurse.  As a mother to two little ones, I hope to one day be a pediatric nurse to help other children.”

Providing local training and local employment to rural residents is one way SSCC is committed to helping the workforce.

“This partnership allows us to provide educational and training opportunities where our students live and work,” said Dr. Chris Cox, SSCC’s President.  “Ultimately, we are committed to helping provide a sustainable workforce here in Alabama in careers that are in high demand.”

SSCC and BMC employees were on hand at the orientation to answer questions about the partnership and help admitted students with registration.  BMC’s new clinical space includes high-fidelity simulators, hospital beds, and a headwall system designed to mimic the hospital setting.

“The need for nurses is greater than it has ever been,” said Joseph Marchant, BMC’s Chief Executive Officer.  “We are excited to see these students learning in the classroom and in the clinical setting on BMC’s campus.”
