“Best of Enemies” Auditions Scheduled for January 4 & 5

December 9, 2022 – Theatre Tuscaloosa will hold auditions for Best of Enemies, a play by Mark St. Germain that is based on the novel The Best of Enemies by Osha Gray Davidson, on January 4 and 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the Wilson Carr Rehearsal Hall on the Martin Campus of Shelton State Community College (9500 Old Greensboro Road, Tuscaloosa, AL 35405).

Based on an inspiring true story, Best of Enemies shows how a new beginning can lead the worst of enemies to become the best of friends. In 1971, arch-enemies Ann Atwater and C.P. Ellis find themselves face-to-face on a committee formed to desegregate the schools of Durham, North Carolina. Seemingly a recipe for disaster, their mutual prejudices about one another are soon shattered as each begins to understand the plight of the other.

Roles are available for two females/female-identifying individuals (one White and one Black/African American) and two males/male-identifying individuals (one White and one Black/African American) ages 30s-50s. Those interested in auditioning should be prepared for cold readings from the script and bring a complete calendar of any potential conflicts with the rehearsal schedule. No monologue will be required to audition. Theatre Tuscaloosa strongly encourages all auditionees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to protect themselves and the integrity of the production. A perusal copy of the script is available to read in the ticket office during normal office hours, Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Theatre Tuscaloosa’s offices will close for the holidays from December 23 through January 2.

The final rehearsal schedule will be announced after casting, but rehearsals are tentatively scheduled to begin on January 9 and will generally run 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday evenings and 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sundays.

Best of Enemies performances run February 17-26, 2023, in the Bean-Brown Theatre.
