Shelton State Visual Arts to Present Ginger Davis Exhibition

January 13, 2025  – Shelton State Community College’s Visual Arts Department will present the artwork of Ginger Davis January 21 through March 7 in the Martin Campus Cadence Bank Art Gallery.   Both the exhibition and the reception are free and open to the public.

Ginger Davis is a Houston-based visual artist working primarily in photography. Her practice spans from digital media to alternative photographic processes. She currently uses long exposure lens-less pinhole camera techniques to explore the passage of time. Ginger is concentrating on the environment, weather, vintage photo paper, and the sun to communicate this idea. This is part of a long-term ongoing project that will focus on climate change.

Originally, she is an Alabama native that is self-taught in alternative photographic processes. Ginger received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Houston. Her earlier work consisted of gumoil portraits and documentary photography dealing with the urban environment in Houston. She is a Forensic Photographer for the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences in Houston, TX.

“Ginger uses the smallest and most basic of photographic means – pinhole-photography – to capture exceptionally large and complex phenomena that exist outside of the human perceptual capabilities, such as the motion of the sun across the sky,” observed Carson Grubaugh, the College’s award-winning art instructor.  “I am very excited for our students and the Tuscaloosa community to see these images and learn about how they were produced.”

Part of Shelton State’s designation as the Community College of the Fine Arts for the state of Alabama, the visual arts department focuses on instruction in art techniques and processes engaging students in creative thinking, self-exploration, and critical evaluation.  Courses are designed to provide students with a strong foundation in studio arts and art history.  The art program offers experience for students pursuing transfer to a four-year college program, art careers, and/or personal enrichment.

The Cadence Bank Art Gallery, located on the Martin Campus, showcases a changing series of exhibitions of local, regional, and national artists. The Gallery is open during the College’s regular business hours.,
