Shelton State and The University of North Alabama Sign Agreement

Shelton State andThe University of North Alabama

October 3, 2022 – On Tuesday, September 20, 2022, Shelton State Community College (SSCC) and the University of North Alabama (UNA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishing clearly defined transfer information for SSCC students who wish to continue their education in Culinary Arts at UNA.

According to the terms of the MOU, the University of North Alabama “seeks to improve the transition for SSCC students into its programs.”  UNA guarantees admission to all SSCC students provided the student is in good standing at SSCC and has either earned 45 transferable credit hours or has completed an associate degree.  Additionally, UNA and SSCC will designate transfer advisors to assist students interested in participating in this agreement.

The MOU is intended to assist both institutions in efforts to better serve students. The primary objective is the development of a program that offers SSCC associate degree students the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree at UNA. Both UNA and SSCC agree to explore cooperative initiatives of mutual interest to further enhance the excellence and opportunity in education for students, faculty, and the community.

“This partnership will offer our students yet another opportunity to succeed,” stated Dr. Chris Cox, President of Shelton State.  “One of our primary goals is to reduce barriers for our students. In providing enhanced resources for transfer through this MOU, we are offering additional support and guidance for our transient population.”

As a secondary part of this MOU, the University of North Alabama will provide full-time SSCC employees a discount of 20% of the tuition value of online graduate or undergraduate courses.

“UNA is pleased to partner with Shelton State Community College on this partnership that paves the way for both institutions to serve the workforce development needs of the state of Alabama,” said UNA President Dr. Ken Kitts. “Further, this MOU underscores UNA’s role in graduating students who are ready to fill in-demand roles in Culinary Arts.”
