Title IX and Pregnancy

Title IX Prohibits Discrimination on The Basis of Pregnancy or Related Conditions

Shelton State is dedicated to fostering an environment that honors the dignity of its students, faculty, and staff, ensuring it is free from any form of discrimination based on sex, including pregnancy and related conditions. Title IX explicitly forbids discrimination against students due to pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, or lactation. This protection extends to school-sponsored extracurricular activities, internships, athletics, financial aid and scholarships, career counseling, as well as laboratory and clinical work.

The Title IX Coordinator will work with students experiencing pregnancy or related conditions to prevent sex discrimination and to ensure that the student continues to have equal access to Shelton State’s education programs or activities. If you would like to request accommodations for pregnancy or conditions related to pregnancy, complete the Title IX Pregnancy and Parenting Accommodations Request Form. For assistance or additional information, contact the Title IX Office at 205.391.2380 or TitleIX@sheltonstate.edu.

Employees who are pregnant or have related conditions are encouraged to contact Human Resources to discuss reasonable accommodations for known limitations related to, affected by, or arising out of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions.

It is essential to recognize that providing reasonable accommodations is a legal obligation. If you believe a request significantly alters a course or causes an undue burden, please reach out to the Title IX Office. Students are entitled to take leave for pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage, termination of pregnancy, and/or recovery as long as deemed medically necessary by their licensed healthcare provider. This may include absences for necessary medical appointments or an extended leave for high-risk pregnancies or childbirth. This guideline remains in effect even if the medically necessary leave exceeds the school’s standard leave policy. Students should not face penalties for taking leave and must be allowed to return to school in the same status they held prior to their absence.
