Student Achievement

Shelton State Community College evaluates student success using a number of different measures throughout students’ academic careers. These outcomes emanate from the institutional goals found in the Shelton 2020 Strategic Plan. These measures were selected based on college, state, and federal performance indicators and published as of spring 2018.

Retention, full-time students: Percent of first-time, full-time students from the fall of first enrollment who are enrolled the following fall (US Department of Education Integrated Postsecondary Education Data system (IPEDS) data). The College has exceeded the target goal in the previous three years but fell behind by 1% in the most recent cohort comparison.

 

Outcome: SSCC will outperform the average full-time retention rate of the IPEDS Comparison Group.

Graduation Rate, 150% of normal time: Graduation rate for first-time, full-time credential-seeking students, in 150% of normal time (normal time = two years; 150% = three years). (US Department of Education Integrated Postsecondary Education Data system (IPEDS) data). The College has fallen below of the target goal for all three years, though the College’s graduation rate is rising.  Though we are unable to obtain data for the IPEDS Comparison Group at this time, the College’s 150% graduation rate for 2017-2018 increased to 22%.

 

Outcome: SSCC will outperform the average graduation rate of the IPEDS Comparison Group.

Job Placement: Employment of graduates of Shelton State technical programs in the prior year, based on unemployment insurance data and faculty reporting (unemployment insurance data is limited to in-state students working for employers paying unemployment insurance). (Federal Perkins grant performance measure 4P1). The College has exceeded the target goal for all four years.

 

Outcome: SSCC will outperform the Alabama Community College System targeted level of performance for job placement.

Online Course Success: The overall success rate in online classes (Success = A/B/C for Fall Semester of academic year). The success rate for the traditional courses served as the threshold for accountability.  The College has fallen just short of the target goal for three years but success in online courses surpassed success in traditional courses in fall 2017.

 

Outcome: The overall success rate in online classes will be equal to or greater than the overall average course success rate in traditional classes.
