REALSKILL Institute

What is the REALSKILL Institute?

The REALSKILL Institute addresses soft skills that fall outside traditional academic pursuits but are necessary for career success.  The specific skills covered are decision making, personal responsibility in the form of self-motivation and work ethic, and professional communication.  The Institute has two phases that are part of Shelton State’s Orientation to College course (ORI 101) and Career Services.

What is the process?

Phase 1

Students complete the first three Advanced Experiences: Continuous Improvement, Initiative, and Collaboration, in the ORI 101 course.  As part of these experiences, students will earn badges and certificates.

Phase 2

Students who successfully complete the first three Advanced Experiences in the ORI 1O1 course have the opportunity to be part of Phase 2 of the REALSKILL Institute.  As part of Phase 2, students will complete the Customer Service Experience, Change Management Experience, and the Capstone Experience, and have the opportunity to earn the SkillsUSA Career Essentials Credential.

Phase 2 is free, and students volunteer to participate.  Students are assigned a REALSKILL Coach who will help facilitate completion of the Customer Service Experience, Change Management Experience, and the Capstone Experience.  Phase 2 is designed to be completed in one semester, and students may work at their own pace.  Students must attend 4 whole group gatherings throughout the semester.  The dates and times of these gatherings will be determined once a student is assigned a REALSKILL Coach.
