The Dance Program at Shelton State Community College delivers a dynamic and rigorous experience that integrates creativity, technical, performance, and scholarly pursuits designed to prepare the 21st-century artist. Our dance program offers a course of study filled with movement and theory classes for everyone, from the complete novice to the most advanced dancer. You are sure to find your place in our program. The mission of Dance at Shelton is to cultivate and foster artistic growth within every individual. We uplift and amplify students’ voices through dance to further nourish their self-confidence, agency, and identity. Through our curriculum, students are guided towards a worldly awareness of dance being a catalyst for positive change in our communities. The knowledge and training students gain in this program guarantee the development of a well-rounded dancer, choreographer, teacher, and performing artist.
We uphold ethical, sustainable, and progressive practices that are grounded in anti-oppressive pedagogies. Dance at Shelton intentionally works with and for the community in a manner that advocates for a diverse, equitable, and inclusive arts education. Utilizing a range of student-centered approaches, we aim to forge cultural relevance and arts advocacy that centers Dance in global discourse.

DANCE COURSES

- DNC 101 – Dance Appreciation
This course is an introduction to dance through the analysis of historical and contemporary dance forms. Students will examine dance as an expression of human culture and analyze key developments in dance related to social, political, and historical changes/events. Films, demonstrations, and performances are used in this class.
- DNC 110 – Introduction to Dance Styles
This course is an introduction to dance styles.
- DNC 111 – Elementary Modern Dance
This is a studio course in modern dance techniques at the elementary level.
- DNC 267 – Jazz Dance I
This is the first of a six-course sequence providing the student with a study of basic principles and techniques on jazz dance, including an introduction to the varied movement styles and rhythms of this dance form.

SUMMER DANCE INTENSIVE
Join Shelton State for Education that Dances!
The Shelton State Dance Program is excited to announce their first annual Summer Dance Intensive June 12 through June 16, 2023. The Dance Intensive is designed to address the needs of students ages 14 – 18 and prepare them for embarking on their future dance journey. The Summer Dance Intensive is comprised of learning various dance styles and techniques. Students will perform what they learn for family, friends, and community members at a final showcase on Friday, June 16 at 11:30 a.m.
The registration fee is $125 per student with a registration deadline of May 12, 2023. Students must arrive at the Shelton State Dance Studio (Martin Room 1902) at 8:00 a.m. and sign out at 4:00 p.m. Additionally, students should bring their lunch, snacks, and water bottle.
