College Awards

The Shelton State College Awards are named in honor of previous SSCC Presidents of former and current campuses and are the top awards presented by the College. Nominations for the College Awards are obtained by student application.  These awards will be honored during the Honors Convocation Ceremony held in April.

 

Each award requires a separate application. Details for each of the awards and application processes are below.

 

Applications for spring 2025 must be submitted by Friday, February 28, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. All criteria must be met for your application to be considered.

The Awards

1. Harold I. James Oustanding Technical Student Award

The Harold I. James Outstanding Technical Student Award is named in honor of Mr. Harold I. James, who served as the President of Shelton State Technical College from 1951 to 1976.

 

To be eligible for this award, applicants must be currently enrolled in one of the College’s technical programs. They must have completed at least 24 semester hours at Shelton State with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The award recognizes outstanding achievements in the classroom and workplace.

 

Recipients of the Harold I. James Award will receive a tuition waiver for 3 credit hours.

2. Thomas E. Umphrey Outstanding Freshman Award

The Thomas E. Umphrey Outstanding Freshman Award is named in honor of Dr. Thomas E. Umphrey, President of Shelton State Community College from 1988 to 2000.

 

To be eligible for this award, applicants must be currently enrolled freshmen with a minimum of 12 to a maximum of 31 semester hours completed at Shelton State and a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. The award recognizes outstanding academic achievement and involvement in campus activities.

 

Recipients of the Thomas E. Umphrey Outstanding Freshman Award will receive a tuition waiver for 3 credit hours.

3. Norman C. Cephus Special Achievement Award

The Norman C. Cephus Special Achievement Award is named in honor of Mr. Norman C. Cephus, who served as the President of Shelton State Technical College from 1982 to 1990.

 

To be eligible for this award, applicants must be currently enrolled in one of the College’s technical or academic programs. They must have completed at least 12 semester hours at Shelton State with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in college-level coursework. The award recognizes academic achievements, involvement in campus and community activities, technical accomplishments, and job-related activities.

 

Recipients of the Norman C. Cephus Special Achievement Award will receive a tuition waiver for 3 credit hours.

4. Leo Sumner Outstanding Sophomore Awards

The Leo Sumner Outstanding Sophomore Award is named in honor of Dr. Leo Sumner, who served as the President of Shelton State Community College from 1976 to 1988.

 

To be eligible for this award, applicants must be currently enrolled sophomores with 32 or more semester hours, with at least 15 semester hours completed at Shelton State, and a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. The award recognizes outstanding academic performance, school involvemnent, and community services, and is the highest honor a student can earn at Shelton State Community College.

 

Recipients of the Leo Sumner Outstanding Sophomore Award will receive a $500 honorarium.

5. I.W. Mitchell Outstanding Technical Student Award

The I. W. Mitchell Outstanding Technical Student Award is named in honor of Mr. I. W. Mitchell, who served as the President of Fredd State Technical College from 1976 to 1982.

 

To be eligible for this award, applicants must be currently enrolled in one of the College’s technical programs. They must have completed at least 12 semester hours at Shelton State with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in college-level coursework. The award recognizes academic achievements, involvement in campus and community activities, technical accomplishments, and job-related activities.

 

Recipients of the I. W. Mitchell Outstanding Technical Student Award will receive a tuition waiver for 3 credit hours.
