In competition in Orlando, Florida, the Shelton State Cheerleaders secured their thirteenth consecutive national championship at the 2020 UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship. The team was coached by Brittany Crook.

SSCC’s own Monica Nakashima was one of twenty-six Phi Theta Kappa students whose writing was published in the 2019 issue of the organization’s online literary journal, Nota Bene. Selected from more than 550 entries, Nakashima’s piece, “Should Young Children Be Allowed to Medically Transition,” was judged by current and retired college faculty and staff from across the country.

Will Delaney and Hunter Porter, members of SSCC’s Bass Fishing Sports Club, competed in the Fishing League Worldwide Championship in Lake County, Florida. Delaney and Porter qualified for the championship in 2019 by finishing second out of 235 teams.

Allison Battle, Kazarious Brown, Nicole Malinverni, Ivan Taylor, and Chris Victory from the Shelton State music department participated in the 2020 ALANATS auditions. Kazarious Brown was selected as a finalist for the second year college men’s musical theatre division. He also placed first in his category at the finals.

Following a win against Wallace State Community College, the Shelton State Lady Bucs won the 2020 Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) Championship.

Madonna Thompson was named ACCC Co-Coach of the Year and Region 22 Coach of the Year.

Following a win against Snead State Community College, the Shelton State Bucs won the 2020 Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) Championship.

Shelton State Community College Women’s Basketball Coach, Madonna Thompson, and Men’s Basketball Coach, Joseph Eatmon, were named the 2020 Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) Region 22 Coaches of the Year following wins in the ACCC Championship..

The College’s Cara Crosslin was named the Alabama Community College Conference Athletic Director of the Year.

"Since arriving at Shelton State, Cara has been instrumental in building a strong and supportive athletic department,” stated Amanda Harbison, Shelton State’s Dean of Student Services. “Her vision for our students reflects her passion for student success, and her experience as a student-athlete has proved to be an invaluable foundation for her leadership. She connects with our students and provides direction for the division as a whole. I am proud of Coach Crosslin and the way our student athletes have flourished under her guidance.”

Shelton State’s Alpha Epsilon Iota chapter ended the academic year ranked in the Top 100 out of 1,289 chapters worldwide. Additionally, the group won a Hallmark Award for its College Project (which addressed graduation and completion rates) and was named a distinguished chapter for the second year in a row.

Shelton State student officer Katelyn Burkhalter was named a Distinguished Chapter Officer. Burkhalter was a leader for the chapter’s Honors in Action project that focused on the issue of infant mortality. Dr. Kevin Windham, one of the chapter’s advisors alongside Mrs. Shywanda Moore, was recognized with a Continued Excellence Award.

These awards mark 2019-2020 as one of the most decorated years PTK has experienced at Shelton State. This year’s PTK officers included Obi Bruno Da Silva Ndubueze, Charles “Tre” Butler, Makaila Anthony, Anna Kate Baxter, Mary “Abbye” Blocker, Matthew Custred, Brooke Gamble, Rachel Waddle, Deedie Bennett, and Mark Chapman who also served as the 2019-2020 Alabama Regional President.
