As part of the Alabama First Class Pre-K program, Shelton State was approved to host two classrooms of its youngest Buccaneers.
Beginning in spring 2020, the College expanded services and academic offerings to high school students in West Central Alabama Area Health Education Center’s Health Professions Academy. Students were offered orientation, music appreciation, and human growth and development.
“Preview opportunities allow prospective students to learn more about the exciting career pathways available at Shelton State,” said TJ Smith, Director of Recruitment. “Students are often unaware of many high-demand, high-wage career possibilities in West Alabama and surrounding areas, and we hope to change that.”
The 2019 BEST Robotics competition, “Off the Grid,” saw twenty-two schools competing to create an all-purpose, robotic system capable of repairing an electric grid in the event of a catastrophe.
Shelton State Community College’s Dr. Elijah Pugh and six music students attended the 19th Annual Trumpet Festival of the Southeast January 31 – February 2 in Kenesaw, Georgia. The festival hosted students from around the southeastern United States.
Shelton State music students performed as a trumpet ensemble in concert alongside ensembles from other attending colleges.

Shelton State Community College Workforce Development (SSCC) offered the first of it JumpStartAL training. Using leading edge virtual reality (VR) training solutions from the job simulator TRANSFRVR, JumpStartAL offers new education and training programs to develop the state’s next generation of highly skilled workers.
One of five Alabama community colleges piloting JumpStartAL training, SSCC is using modules that were created with input from industry partners and will help participants develop specific skills needed to jobs, beginning with manufacturing and expanding into other industries in the future.
