HOW TO DOWNLOAD EBOOKS TO PERSONAL COMPUTERS AND DEVICES

EBSCOHost Ebooks (For all devices that work via Adobe Digital Editions)
OverDrive.com Ebooks (For all devices that work via Adobe Digital Editions and Kindle formats)
Accessible Ebooks (For the Print-Impaired)

EBSCOHost Ebooks
The Shelton State Libraries now offer two collections of ebooks.  One is through EBSCOHost and can be downloaded to any computer, ebook reader, or other device that is compatible with Adobe Digital Editions 1.7.1 (or higher).  Some handheld devices, such as phones, iPads, etc., may also work if they have the capacity.  Devices generally includes the Barnes & Noble Nook, all four Sony Digital Readers, and home computers.  Amazon.com Kindles are not compatible with this software.

You can read EBSCOHost eBooks on campus without having to download them.  If you choose a title in our catalog that is in electronic format, you may simply choose EBOOK FULL TEXT just to examine or read on campus.  To download eBooks to your own devices, follow these steps.  You only have to prepare your computer or device once for reading eBooks.

1.   To prepare your device for downloading eBooks, go to Adobe Digital Editions  and download the FREE software.  You'll be asked to establish a FREE Adobe account before you can download.

2.   To search for an ebook through the CATALOG METHOD, search for a resource as usual (search by keyword, title, author, etc.).  Once you get a list from your search, you will see a designation for the type of resource it is.  The Ebook symbol is a book with a small floppy disk in front of it.  Note that you can narrow your selections by clicking on the ebook filter in the left column.

3.  In the catalog record, you will see the phrase "CLICK HERE FOR EBOOK."  Do that to go to the EBSCOHost page.  When you get to the EBSCOHost page, click on SIGN IN at the top of the page.  Then click on  CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT  and enter your own login and password.  This must be done while on campus in order for the EBSCOHost to verify your affiliation with the college.  This login and password are now your responsibility -- no one at Shelton State will have access to them (or can help you recall them).   Once you have created an account on campus, you can access from any where 24/7.

4.  To search for an ebook through the EBOOK ONLY METHOD, go to  EBSCOHost Ebook Collection  . This page includes EBSCOHost ebooks available to Shelton State students.

5.    Follow online directions for downloading.  You will have options for the checkout period and other features.  Use the HELP screens for more information.

OverDrive.Com Ebooks
The second collection of ebooks available through the Shelton State Libraries is through OverDrive.com.  This collection includes fiction and other best sellers and is a complement to our program of leased best sellers in print format.  These ebooks can be downloaded to any computer, ebook reader, or other device that is compatible with Adobe Digital Editions 1.7.1 (or higher).  Some handheld devices, such as phones, iPads, etc., may also work if they have the capacity.  Devices generally includes the Barnes & Noble Nook, all four Sony Digital Readers, and home computers.  Amazon.com Kindles are also compatible with selected OverDrive.com titles.   The following log in procedures can be used both on and off campus.

1.  If you have an ebook reader other than a Kindle or wish to download to a different type of device (smartphone, notebook, etc.), go to Adobe Digital Editions  and download the FREE software.  You'll be asked to establish a FREE Adobe account before you can download. OR go to the Overdrive.com help screen  and follow the directions.  Additional helpful details are also available on this page.

2.  If you have a Kindle, you should have no problems downloading directly to it, but go to the Overdrive.com help screen for additional information.

3.  In the catalog record, you will see the phrase "CLICK HERE FOR EBOOK." You will be directed to the Shelton State Libraries Overdrive.com page.  Place the book in your cart and check out.  You will be prompted to enter your Banner (S-ID) number (ex. S00123456).  Select your check-out period (7 or 14 days).  If you need assistance, speak with a member of the library staff for clarification or email twilliams@sheltonstate.edu .

4.  To search for an ebook through the EBOOK ONLY METHOD, go to the libraries' Overdrive.Com page.  Type in a Tuscaloosa zip code (35405).  Select "Shelton State Community College."  Continue with the directions included in #3 above.

5.  Follow online directions for downloading.  You will have options for the checkout period and other features.  Use the HELP screens for more information.
