PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

What is the program?
The Commercial Food Service program provides students with the fundamentals and principles of food service. Students are trained in food production, basic nutrition and menu planning, short order cooking, preparation of sauces, gravies and soups and management strategies to prepare students for work in this field.
 
Who is the Commercial Food Service Certificate for?

This program is recommended for students who are looking for immediate entry-level employment in the food service industry (cook, fry cook, food prep worker, etc.). A GED or high school diploma is not required to enroll in the program, but students do need to sit for the Ability to Benefit test prior to enrolling. Where is the Commerical Food Service program located?
The Commercial Food Service program is located on the C.A.Fredd campus of Shelton State Community College. We have a fully furnished – and newly renovated – kitchen where most classes take place.
When is the program offered?
Courses are taught year round during the day and evening for full-time and part-time students to accommodate a wide range of schedules.
 
What awards does the program lead to and how long does it take?
Students may earn a Certificate. Students enrolled full-time may complete a Certificate in two semesters (8 months).
 
What jobs will this program prepare me for?
Bakers, assistant cooks, prep-cooks and kitchen assistants.
